While conventional implants may require several months of healing before a restoration can be placed, Straumann®’s SLActive® surface can shorten the osseointegration period to as little as three to four weeks in many cases. Straumann® also offers implant options specifically designed for patients with reduced bone density, which can expand candidacy for patients who might otherwise be told they are not eligible for implants. The brand’s extensive clinical research and documented success rate are among the highest in the dental implant industry.

With proper care, Straumann® dental implants are designed to last for decades, and many patients keep them for a lifetime. The titanium implant post itself integrates permanently with the jawbone and does not decay or develop cavities like a natural tooth. The crown or restoration attached to the implant may eventually need to be replaced due to normal wear, typically after 10 to 15 years or longer. The longevity of your implant depends on maintaining good oral hygiene, attending regular dental checkups and cleanings, and avoiding habits like smoking that can compromise the bone and gum tissue surrounding the implant.

Most adults with one or more missing teeth and generally good overall health are candidates for dental implants. The primary requirement is having enough healthy jawbone to support the implant post. If you have experienced bone loss in the area where the tooth is missing, a bone grafting procedure may be recommended to build up the jawbone before implant placement. Conditions such as uncontrolled diabetes, active gum disease, and heavy smoking can affect healing and may need to be addressed before proceeding. Dr. Ramchand uses i-CAT® 3D imaging to evaluate your bone structure, plan the optimal implant position, and determine whether any preparatory procedures are needed.

The Straumann® implant process at our Bonham office generally involves three visits. At the first appointment, Dr. Ramchand performs a thorough examination including three-dimensional X-rays to develop a precise surgical plan. During the second visit, the implant is placed into the jawbone under local anesthesia. A protective cap is placed on top, and the gum tissue is sutured closed. In some cases, the implant can be placed directly through the gum without additional incisions. After surgery, osseointegration takes place over approximately three to four weeks as the bone bonds with the implant’s SLActive® surface. At the third appointment, the custom-crafted crown or restoration is permanently attached. In certain situations, a temporary restoration can be placed on the same day as the implant.

Dental implant placement is performed under local anesthesia, so you should not feel pain during the procedure. Most patients report that the experience is more comfortable than they expected. For patients who experience dental anxiety or who are undergoing more complex implant procedures, sedation dentistry options are available at our office to help you remain relaxed throughout the appointment. After the anesthesia wears off, some soreness, swelling, and minor bruising around the implant site are normal. These symptoms typically peak within the first two to three days and can be managed with prescribed or over-the-counter pain medication. Most patients return to their normal routine within a day or two of the procedure.

Straumann® implants can be used to replace a single missing tooth with an individual implant and crown, multiple adjacent teeth with an implant-supported bridge, or a full arch of teeth with an implant-supported denture or an All-on-4® style restoration that anchors a complete set of teeth on as few as four implants. The treatment approach depends on how many teeth are missing, the location in the mouth, your bone volume, and your overall treatment goals. Dental implants and dentures serve different needs, and the better option depends on your individual situation. Implants are fixed permanently in the jawbone, which means they do not slip, shift, or require adhesive. They also stimulate the jawbone and help prevent the bone loss that commonly occurs after teeth are removed. Traditional removable dentures sit on the gum tissue and do not preserve bone, which can cause the fit to loosen over time as the jawbone changes shape. However, dentures are a less invasive and less expensive initial option, and they can be a good choice for patients who are not candidates for implant surgery. For many patients, the ideal solution is implant-supported dentures, which combine the stability of implants with the full-arch coverage of a denture.

Dental implants are maintained in much the same way as natural teeth. Brush twice daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush, floss around the implant and restoration every day, and visit Bonham Sunshine Dental for regular professional cleanings and checkups. While the implant itself cannot develop a cavity, the gum tissue and bone surrounding it can still be affected by bacterial infection, a condition known as peri-implantitis. Maintaining excellent oral hygiene and keeping up with professional maintenance appointments are the most important steps you can take to protect the long-term health of your implant. Avoid chewing on very hard objects like ice or hard candy, and if you grind your teeth at night, ask Dr. Ramchand about a custom night guard to protect both your implant and your natural teeth.
