Procedure-Specific Aftercare Guidelines
Every oral surgery procedure has its own recovery timeline and care requirements. Select the procedure below that matches your treatment to view detailed aftercare instructions.
After Tooth Extractions
Tooth extraction recovery typically takes 7 to 10 days, depending on the complexity of the procedure. Your aftercare instructions cover managing bleeding and gauze placement, swelling reduction with cold compresses, diet modifications during the first 48 to 72 hours, pain management strategies, and how to keep the extraction site clean without disturbing the blood clot. Protecting the clot that forms in the socket is essential to preventing a painful condition called dry socket.
After Dental Implant Surgery
Dental implant surgery requires a longer and more careful recovery period than a standard extraction. Implants need time to fuse with your jawbone through a process called osseointegration, which can take several months. Your post-operative instructions address bleeding control, swelling management, dietary restrictions during the initial healing phase, oral hygiene around the implant site, activity limitations, and signs that may indicate a problem with healing.
After Bone Grafting
Bone grafting is often performed in preparation for dental implant placement. The graft site needs time to integrate with your existing bone, and protecting the area from pressure or trauma is critical during the first several weeks. Avoid chewing on the side of the graft, follow your prescribed medication schedule, and attend all follow-up appointments so Dr. Ramchand can monitor healing before moving forward with implant placement.
After Periodontal (Gum) Surgery
Periodontal procedures such as gum grafting, crown lengthening, and pocket reduction surgery involve the soft tissues surrounding your teeth. Recovery instructions focus on keeping the surgical area clean with gentle saltwater rinses, avoiding brushing directly on the treated tissue for the first several days, eating soft foods, and managing discomfort with prescribed or over-the-counter pain medication. Tobacco use significantly slows gum tissue healing and should be avoided.
Frequently Asked Questions
About Oral Surgery Recovery in Bonham, TX
How long does it take to recover from a tooth extraction?
Most patients feel significantly better within three to five days after a simple tooth extraction. A surgical extraction, such as wisdom tooth removal, may take seven to ten days for initial recovery. You should be able to return to work or school within one to two days for simple extractions. Complete healing of the gum tissue and bone underneath typically takes several weeks, but discomfort is usually manageable with over-the-counter pain medication within the first few days.
What can I eat after oral surgery?
For the first 24 to 48 hours, stick to cool, soft foods that require little or no chewing. Good options include yogurt, applesauce, mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, smoothies (without a straw), lukewarm soup, and pudding. As healing progresses over the next several days, you can gradually add softer solid foods like pasta, steamed vegetables, and fish. Avoid crunchy, hard, spicy, or very hot foods until Dr. Ramchand confirms it is safe to resume your normal diet.
How do I prevent dry socket after a tooth extraction?
Dry socket occurs when the blood clot that forms in the extraction site becomes dislodged or dissolves before the wound heals. To reduce your risk, avoid using straws, spitting forcefully, or rinsing vigorously for at least 48 to 72 hours after the extraction. Do not smoke or use tobacco products, as tobacco chemicals significantly increase dry socket risk. Follow all aftercare instructions provided by our team, and call our office at 903-583-7786 if you develop increasing pain several days after your extraction.
Is bleeding normal after oral surgery?
Some bleeding and oozing is completely normal during the first 12 to 24 hours after surgery. To control bleeding, bite down firmly on the gauze pad placed by Dr. Ramchand for 30 to 45 minutes without removing it. If bleeding continues after changing the gauze two or three times, try biting on a moistened black tea bag, as the tannic acid in tea helps blood clot. Light pink saliva is normal for a day or two. If you experience heavy or persistent bleeding that does not slow with pressure, contact our office.
When can I brush my teeth after oral surgery?
You can resume brushing the teeth that are not near the surgical site on the same day as your procedure. However, avoid brushing directly on or around the surgical area for the first two to three days, or until Dr. Ramchand advises otherwise. Instead, gently rinse with warm saltwater beginning the day after surgery. When you resume brushing near the surgical site, use a soft-bristled toothbrush and be very gentle to avoid disturbing the healing tissue.
How long should I wait to exercise after oral surgery?
Avoid strenuous physical activity, heavy lifting, and vigorous exercise for at least three to five days after oral surgery. Increased heart rate and blood pressure from exercise can restart bleeding at the surgical site and increase swelling. Light walking is usually fine after the first day. For more complex procedures such as dental implant placement or bone grafting, Dr. Ramchand may recommend a longer period of reduced activity. Ask during your follow-up appointment when it is safe to return to your full exercise routine.
Can I smoke after oral surgery?
Smoking is strongly discouraged after any oral surgery procedure. Tobacco smoke contains chemicals that restrict blood flow to the surgical site, slow healing, and increase the risk of infection and dry socket. For tooth extractions, avoid smoking for a minimum of 72 hours. For dental implant surgery and bone grafting, the recommendation is to avoid smoking for as long as possible, ideally several weeks, to give the implant the best chance of successful integration. If you use tobacco products, discuss this with Dr. Ramchand before your procedure so she can provide additional guidance.
What should I do if my pain gets worse instead of better?
Pain after oral surgery should gradually improve each day. If your pain increases after the second or third day rather than improving, this could indicate a complication such as dry socket, infection, or an issue with the surgical site. Contact Bonham Sunshine Dental & Implant Center at 903-583-7786 as soon as possible. Do not wait for your scheduled follow-up appointment if your pain is worsening, you develop a fever, or you notice swelling that is getting worse instead of going down.
Do I need a follow-up appointment after oral surgery?
Yes. Follow-up appointments are an important part of your recovery. Dr. Ramchand will examine the surgical site to confirm it is healing properly, remove any sutures if needed, and address any concerns you may have. For dental implant patients, follow-up visits also allow us to monitor the osseointegration process and plan the next steps in your treatment. Your follow-up appointment is typically scheduled before you leave our office on the day of your surgery.
Does Bonham Sunshine Dental offer sedation for oral surgery?
Yes. We offer sedation dentistry options to help patients who experience dental anxiety or who are undergoing longer or more complex surgical procedures. Sedation helps you remain relaxed and comfortable throughout your treatment. If you received sedation, you will need a responsible adult to drive you home after your appointment and stay with you for several hours as the effects wear off. For more details, visit our Sedation Dentistry page or call our office at 903-583-7786 to discuss which option is right for you.
