Composite (White) Fillings — Post-Operative Instructions

Composite fillings are fully hardened before you leave our office and are ready for normal use. However, your tooth may need time to adjust. Please review the instructions below to ensure proper healing and avoid complications.

After Tooth Extraction 1

Post-Operative Instructions

Follow these steps carefully to support a healthy recovery.

Sensitivity After Treatment

Normal adjustments as your tooth heals

QUICK TIP

If sensitivity persists, worsens, or becomes painful, please contact our office at  903-583-7786.

Numbness from Local Anesthetic

Allow time for the anesthetic to wear off

If local anesthetic was used, your lips, tongue, and teeth may remain numb for several hours. Although your filling is fully hardened, do not chew until the numbness has completely worn off to avoid accidentally biting or injuring your lips or tongue.

Bite & Chewing Adjustments

Your bite may feel different initially

Your bite may feel slightly different after treatment. If your bite feels uneven, high, or if the tooth is sore when chewing, please call our office to schedule a bite adjustment. An improper bite will not correct itself and delaying adjustment may lead to tooth discomfort or damage.

What to Avoid

These actions can cause dry socket and delay healing

Avoid very hard or sticky foods on the treated tooth for the first 24 hours.

Smoking, Vaping & Tobacco — 10-Day Restriction

Avoid smoking, vaping, or using any tobacco products for 10 days.

Mild Discomfort

Normal after treatment

Mild soreness or tenderness at the injection site is normal. Over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen may be taken as directed, if tolerated.

Eating & Oral Care

Normal after treatment

Maintain good hygiene while protecting your filling

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about composite (white) fillings.

Composite fillings typically last 5-10 years, depending on the size of the filling, your bite, and your oral hygiene habits. Larger fillings or those in areas with heavy chewing pressure may need replacement sooner. Regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups will help extend the life of your filling.

Most patients experience sensitivity for a few days to a few weeks after placement. The sensitivity should gradually decrease. If it persists beyond a few weeks or worsens, contact our office—you may need a bite adjustment or additional evaluation.

You can eat once the numbness has completely worn off (usually 2-3 hours). However, avoid hard, sticky, or very hot/cold foods for the first 24 hours. Start with soft foods and gradually return to your normal diet as comfort allows.

It is important to contact our office if your bite feels uneven or uncomfortable. An improper bite will not correct itself and can lead to additional problems. We can quickly adjust your filling to ensure proper fit and comfort.

Mild tenderness or soreness at the injection site is normal. However, severe or prolonged pain is not normal. If you experience sharp, shooting pain, sensitivity that worsens over time, or pain when biting, please contact our office. This may indicate a bite problem or other issue that needs attention.

No. Continue brushing twice daily and flossing daily as you normally would. Your composite filling is durable and can handle regular oral hygiene. Maintain good habits to protect both your filling and your overall oral health.

Composite fillings can stain over time, especially if exposed to dark foods, beverages (like coffee, tea, or red wine), or smoking. However, they are more stain-resistant than some other materials. Good oral hygiene and limiting staining foods and beverages can help keep your filling looking white and natural.

Signs that your filling may need replacement include chipping or breaking, visible gaps or dark lines around the filling, recurring sensitivity, or if food constantly gets stuck under the filling. Regular dental check-ups help us monitor your filling’s condition and recommend replacement when needed.

Yes! Composite fillings are shade-matched to blend seamlessly with your natural tooth color. Over time, your natural tooth may darken slightly due to age or staining, which could cause the filling to appear slightly different. Professional whitening or filling replacement can restore a uniform appearance.

Please contact us if you experience persistent sensitivity beyond a few weeks, bite discomfort that doesn’t improve, severe pain, signs of chipping or cracking, or any other concerns. When in doubt, call us—we’re here to help.
