What Is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a custom-made cap that covers and protects a damaged, weakened, or restored tooth. It restores the tooth’s shape, strength, and appearance while functioning just like a natural tooth.

Now that your permanent crown has been placed, following these care instructions will help it settle in comfortably and last for many years. Most patients adjust to their new crown within just a few days.

Your After-Care Instructions

Follow these steps to help your new crown settle in comfortably and protect your restoration.

Immediately After Your Appointment

The first 30–60 minutes

First 30–60 Minutes

Do not eat. Allow the crown and cement to set fully.

If Numb

Do not chew until numbness has completely worn off.

Why This Matters

Allowing numbness to fully resolve reduces the risk of accidentally biting your lips, tongue, or cheeks.

Eating Guidelines — First 24 Hours

Protect your crown during the adjustment period

For the first 24 hours, avoid foods that can place unnecessary stress on your new crown during the initial adjustment period:

Very Hard Foods

Ice, hard candy, nuts, popcorn kernels

Sticky Foods

Gum, caramels, taffy, gummy candy

Chewy Foods

Jerky, tough bread, chewy steak

Sensitivity & Soreness

Mild sensitivity is normal and temporary

Some mild sensitivity or soreness is common after crown placement and should improve within a few days. You may notice sensitivity to:

Pressure

When biting or chewing

Hot

Warm foods and beverages

Clod

Cold drinks and foods

Pain Relief

Over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen may be taken as directed, if needed.

If sensitivity persists beyond a few days or worsens, contact our office for evaluation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about crown placement recovery.

Yes. Mild sensitivity to hot, cold, or pressure is common after crown placement and should improve within a few days. Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help. If sensitivity persists or worsens, contact our office at 903-583-7786.

Avoid eating for 30 to 60 minutes after your appointment to allow the cement to set. If local anesthetic was used, wait until numbness has completely worn off before chewing to prevent accidental injury to your lips, tongue, or cheeks.
If your bite feels high, uneven, or uncomfortable, it likely needs a minor adjustment. This is a quick, painless visit. A bite issue will not correct itself and should be addressed promptly to prevent damage to the crown or surrounding teeth. Call our office to schedule an adjustment.
Yes. Continue normal brushing and flossing. When flossing around the crown, slide the floss out gently to the side rather than lifting it upward through the contact point. This prevents accidentally dislodging the crown.
For the first 24 hours, avoid very hard foods (ice, hard candy), sticky foods (gum, caramels), and chewy foods. These can place unnecessary stress on your new crown during the initial adjustment period. Resume your normal diet after the first day.

Call our office at 903-583-7786 if you experience persistent pain, worsening sensitivity, a loose crown, ongoing discomfort when biting, or any concerns with your restoration. Prompt attention helps protect your crown and prevent further complications.
