IV Sedation Dentistry — Pre & Post-Operative Instructions
IV sedation helps you feel relaxed and comfortable during treatment while remaining conscious and responsive. Because IV sedation affects judgment, coordination, and reflexes, these instructions must be followed exactly to ensure your safety and comfort.
Pre-Operative Instructions
Follow these steps carefully to prepare for a safe, smooth experience.
Eating & Drinking Before Your Visit
Fasting is essential for your safety
Approved medications may be taken with a small sip of water, unless directed otherwise by our team.
Quick Tip
Schedule your appointment in the morning if possible. This minimizes fasting time and reduces discomfort.
Medications
Manage your medications carefully
- Take only medications approved by the doctor
- Do NOT take sedatives, sleep aids, or alcohol for 24 hours prior to your appointment
-
Inform our office of:
All current medications
Any medical conditions
Recent illness or hospitalization
Important — Bring Your Medications
Please bring all medications you are currently taking to your appointment so dosages and timing can be confirmed.
Refrigerated medications (such as insulin) do not need to be brought in. However, you must provide a detailed written list of these medications, including dosage and timing.
What to Wear
Dress for comfort and ease of access
- Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing
- Short sleeves are recommended to allow easy IV placement
Please do NOT wear:
- Contact lenses (bring glasses instead)
- Makeup
- Nail polish (required for oxygen monitoring)
- Jewelry or valuables
Escort Requirement
MANDATORY — You must have a responsible adult
You MUST have a responsible adult (18+) present at your appointment. Your escort must:
- Remain in the office during your procedure
- Drive you home afterward
- Provide supervision for the remainder of the day
Treatment will not be provided without an approved escort. Arrange transportation in advance.
Transportation
Plan ahead — you cannot drive yourself home
- You may NOT drive yourself to or from the appointment
- Rideshare services (Uber/Lyft) are NOT permitted unless accompanied by a responsible adult
- Arrange for your escort to pick you up and drive you home
Post-Operative Instructions
Most patients recover quickly from IV sedation. Follow these guidelines for optimal recovery.
What to Expect After Sedation
Normal effects usually resolve within 24 hours
You may experience:
- Drowsiness or grogginess
- Light-headedness
- Memory lapses (difficulty remembering the procedure)
- Slight bruising or tenderness at the IV site

Activity Restrictions (First 24 Hours)
Rest is essential for safe recovery
Do NOT:
- Drive
- Operate machinery or power tools
- Return to work or school
- Drink alcohol
- Take unapproved sedatives
Recovery Tip
Rest at home with supervision
Diet & Eating
Gradually return to normal eating
- Begin with clear liquids (water, broth, juice)
- Progress to soft foods as tolerated (yogurt, applesauce, soup)
- Avoid hot foods until any numbness from local anesthetic has worn off
- Avoid hard, sticky, or crunchy foods for 24 hours
Recovery Tip
Medications After Treatment
Take medications as directed
- Take prescribed pain medications exactly as directed by our office
- Do NOT mix pain medication with alcohol
- If nausea occurs, take small sips of fluids and rest
- Continue routine medications (blood pressure, heart conditions, diabetes) unless instructed otherwise
Bleeding & Surgical Care
Follow procedure-specific instructions
- Follow all post-operative instructions provided for your specific procedure
- Bite on gauze as directed if surgical treatment was performed
- Change gauze every 30-45 minutes if bleeding continues
- Do not disturb the surgical site
Smoking & Vaping
Avoid for at least 72 hours
Do NOT smoke or vape for at least 72 hours after your appointment. Smoking significantly increases the risk of complications and delays healing.
IV Site Care
Minimal care needed
You may experience slight bruising or tenderness at the IV insertion site. This is normal and will resolve within a few days. Keep the area clean and avoid scratching.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about IV sedation dentistry.
WHAT IS IV SEDATION AND HOW DOES IT WORK?
IV sedation is a form of conscious sedation administered through a vein. You remain awake and responsive but feel deeply relaxed and may not remember the procedure. It allows us to perform treatment comfortably while you maintain the ability to follow basic commands. A trained anesthesiologist or dentist monitors your vital signs throughout.
WHY IS A FASTING PERIOD REQUIRED?
The 8-hour fasting period is essential for your safety. IV sedation can affect your gag reflex and swallowing ability. Fasting reduces the risk of nausea, vomiting, or aspiration (food entering the airway) during treatment. This requirement is non-negotiable and taken very seriously.
WILL I BE ASLEEP DURING THE PROCEDURE?
No. IV sedation is different from general anesthesia. You remain conscious and can respond to our team’s instructions. However, you will feel deeply relaxed and may have little to no memory of the procedure afterward. This makes the experience comfortable without the risks of full anesthesia
WHAT IF I FORGET PARTS OF THE PROCEDURE?
Memory loss during IV sedation is completely normal and expected. Most patients remember arriving but have gaps in memory from the procedure itself. This is one of the benefits of IV sedation—you won’t experience anxiety or discomfort during treatment. Our team will review what was done and provide written post-operative instructions.
WHY DO I NEED AN ESCORT?
IV sedation impairs judgment, coordination, and reflexes for up to 24 hours. For your safety, you cannot drive, use public transportation alone, or care for yourself immediately after treatment. An escort ensures you arrive home safely and have supervision during recovery. This is a legal requirement and will be strictly enforced.
CAN I DRIVE HOME AFTER MY APPOINTMENT?
No. You are not permitted to drive for 24 hours after IV sedation, even if you feel alert. Sedation affects your judgment and reaction time, even if you don’t realize it. Your escort must drive you home. Violation of this restriction puts you and others at risk.
HOW LONG DOES IV SEDATION LAST?
The sedation wears off relatively quickly once we stop the medication (usually 15-30 minutes). However, residual effects can last up to 24 hours. You may feel drowsy, light-headed, or confused during this time. Full alertness and coordination typically return within 24 hours.
CAN I TAKE MY REGULAR MEDICATIONS BEFORE MY APPOINTMENT?
This depends on the medication. Some medications should be taken with a small sip of water before fasting, while others should be avoided. Contact our office before your appointment to confirm which medications you should take. Bring a complete list of all medications.
HOW LONG IS THE RECOVERY PERIOD?
Most patients feel relatively normal within a few hours, though some drowsiness may persist. Full recovery—complete alertness and coordination—typically occurs within 24 hours. Avoid driving, operating machinery, or making important decisions during this time.
WHEN CAN I RETURN TO NORMAL ACTIVITIES?
You may resume light activities after 24 hours, such as walking or light housework. Return to work, exercise, or other strenuous activities only after you feel completely alert and coordinated—usually within 24-48 hours. If procedure-specific restrictions apply (surgical treatment), follow those guidelines as well.
WHAT IF I EXPERIENCE UNUSUAL SYMPTOMS AFTER MY APPOINTMENT?
Contact our office immediately if you experience difficulty breathing, chest pain, persistent vomiting, fever, excessive bleeding, or severe pain. If symptoms are life-threatening, seek emergency medical attention. Don’t wait—your safety is our priority.
WHEN SHOULD I CALL THE OFFICE AFTER MY SEDATION APPOINTMENT?
Contact us if you experience unexpected symptoms, severe pain, persistent nausea, signs of infection, or any concerns during your recovery. Our team is available to answer questions and ensure your recovery goes smoothly. When in doubt, call us.
